THE PROFESSOR starts off well: a dying upper-middle-class English professor decides to be nonconforming in the few months he realizes he has left in his life. Unfortunately, the movie's suspense dies ahead of its main character. What could have been an emotional roller coaster turns out to be a meandering train of many promising twists and turns, none of which leads anywhere.
It is easy to see why Johnny Depp is chosen to portray the stage-four cancer victim, as he is able to bring his usual inebriated and drugged-out affectations to the role. Unfortunately, there are no other textures to his performance. This is possibly Mr. Depp's weakest acting in many years.
